Appeal for breakfast cereals for Dundee Fun and Food Programme

8th June 2017

Dundee Foodbank will be supporting  fellow charity Dundee Bairns with their Fun and Food programme. This is a initiative aimed at providing breakfast and lunches to primary-aged children during the school holidays.

This programme was designed in response to a number of primary school headteachers in the city expressing their concern of ‘holiday hunger.’ Whilst children can rely on free school lunches during the term time, this is not the case during school holidays. This either means that children would struggle to get adequate nutritional intake during this period, or their parents would forgo meals in order to ensure their children are fed. Either way, there is a clear case of a ‘holiday hunger’ problem in Dundee.

Dundee Bairns piloted a programme in 2016 to plug this gap by creating the Dundee Fun and Food programme. During the 10 weeks of school holidays, breakfast and lunch is provided to families across Dundee, in addition to a series of fun and educational activities.

Dundee Foodbank provided breakfast cereals last year and we have been approached again this year for further support to cover the summer holiday programme. However, demand is slightly higher this year as the programme expands. The programme is expected to provide 4800 breakfasts, which roughly equates to about 480 boxes of cereal.

We are putting out an appeal this month (June) for donations of breakfast cereals so that we are able to provide support for this tremendous scheme. Please click here for a list of our donation points and their opening times.

Furthermore, if any schools, businesses or churches/mosques (or any other religious group) are interested in organising a ‘cereal drive,’ please get in touch and we would be happy to arrange a collection.

Thank you for your continued support!
